Scott Jones is a writer/director and playwright from Nova Scotia, Canada. After a homophobic attack paralyzed him, Scott has gravitated towards forms of artistic expression that ruminate on and examine disabled grief, resilience, and hope—stories that dive into the depths of the human experience. He explores these themes through live action, animation, and documentary work. Scott loves film and TV narratives that boldly convey the intersections of disability, queerness, and/or sexuality.
Scott has worked with director Laura Marie Wayne and the National Film Board of Canada on a feature length documentary, LOVE, SCOTT (2018), that explores trauma and resilience in relation to homophobic violence. Scott wrote and directed his first short film, COIN SLOT (2022), which premiered at the British Film Institute LGBTQ Flare Festival (UK, 2022) and Phoenix Film Festival (AZ, 2022), and was invited to the 2022 Bengaluru International Short Film Festival, India’s only Oscar-Qualifying festival. The film was listed as a finalist in its category (Inclusive Film).
Scott has participated in the National Screen Institute Series Incubator (Toronto, 2024) for his pilot concept MY FABULOUS NEW ORGASM; RespectAbility Lab for Entertainment Professionals with Disabilities (Los Angeles, 2022); Access CBC Lab (Toronto, 2022 & 2024) and the Whistler International Film Festival Screenwriting Lab (2020). In 2020, Scott won the Atlantic International Film Festival Screenwriter’s Lab Power Pitch Award for his feature film screenplay OPUS 118, NO. 2.
He has also worked as a technical consultant for Stephen Dunn’s reimagining of QUEER AS FOLK (Peacock, 2022). In the Spring of 2022, Scott began development for an animated short film with poet Tanya Davis and animator Sarita McNeil (FREEDOM), which is supported by the NFB of Canada. In 2024 the film was been selected for several film festivals including AIFF and OIAF.
Scott co-wrote (with playwright Robert Chafe) and performed (choral conducting) in a play on the complexities of forgiveness, I FORGIVE YOU, that was produced by Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland. I FORGIVE YOU was directed by Jillian Keiley (former Artistic Director, National Arts Centre of Canada) and premiered at the Saint John’s Arts and Culture Centre (Newfoundland, Canada) in August, 2022, and is slated for the 2022/2023 NAC season, amongst others. In 2024 the play was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Drama.
Scott and his service dog Neemo otherwise enjoy a quiet life, surrounded by woods that lead to the ocean, in Scotsburn, Nova Scotia.
