Described by OrcaSound as a “Renaissance Woman,” Janel Rae has written, composed and self-produced 3 albums, and directed and starred in over 15 of her own music videos, one of which won Best Female Director at Prague’s Music Video Awards. Since having her original compositions featured on Toronto stages at 19 and winning a Governor General’s Award at 20, Janel has defied expectations and pursued ever more ambitious heights. In 2023, Rae composed the score for feature film, Years Fall Later and was awarded a Faith Nolan Surrey Muse Music Award for 2 original songs plucked from her latest album “I Know I Wear Dead People’s Clothes”. Over the last two years, she wrote the screenplay and 22 original songs for her feature-length debut movie musical titled “Let Me Be Frank!” and with an Executive Producer from Hero Entertainment behind it, they are currently in funding stages. In the meantime, she’s been composing original songs and scores for multiple animated short films. Most recently she was hired as the lead writer and composer of a new sung-through musical set to premiere in London, England. Combining sound experiments with infectious melodies, whimsical stories with gut-wrenching lyricism and never losing her sense of humour, Janel Rae is a creative force who, from the earliest ages, has dreamed of re-inventing the musical.
