Amar Wala

Biography

Amar is a Mumbai born, Toronto based director known for his complex, deeply moving, and richly visual filmmaking. Amar is a CSA nominee, and recipient of the prestigious Vanguard Award from the DOC Institute. His award-winning works include his debut feature doc The Secret Trial 5 (‘14), which received a Jury Prize at Hot Docs and was named one of the Top Ten Docs of the Decade by Realscreen Magazine. From there, Amar would direct numerous acclaimed series for CBC, Vice, and Bell Media among others, including the CBC doc series Witness (Hot Docs, Doc NYC ‘23), which he created, directed and produced.

In 2018 Amar would return to his scripted roots with the award-winning short film Shook, which would later be expanded into his scripted feature debut starring Saamer Usmani (Succession, Inventing Anna) and Amy Forsyth (CODA, Gilded Age). The film is distributed by Elevation Pictures and received its world premiere at TIFF ’24.

Amar is currently developing several projects under his Scarborough Pictures banner, with development funding from the Bell Slate Fund. He is represented by GGA in Canada and UTA in the US.
