LaRue Entertainment | Head of Development | 2023-
Jay leads development for LaRue Entertainment. They are responsible for building LaRue’s development slate and packaging series & feature projects under co-presidents Andrew Ferguson and Matt King.
Bell Media | Development Executive, Original Programming, Scripted Series | 2021-2023
Jay covered a wide slate of projects exclusively in the scripted space as a queer, non-binary East Asian development executive at Bell Media. Working across both comedy and drama, they have taken hundreds of pitches, assessing viability for streaming service Crave and national broadcaster CTV, with a keen eye for the international market. Jay has developed projects with everyone, from the most seasoned writers and producers in the country to the most exciting, boldest new voices.
Jay takes great joy in discovering, championing, and fostering talent from 2SGLBTQ+ & BIPOC communities at every level. At the same time, their bread and butter is working with writers and producers of all kinds. They love helping their stories cut through the noisy market, while also making them as character-driven, nuanced, and hugely entertaining as possible. Since their time at Bell, six shows on Jay’s development slate have been greenlit for production. Select titles include:
– SPENCER SISTERS – eOne. Starring Lea Thompson and Stacey Farber. Aired on CTV in Jan 2023 in Canada and The CW in Oct 2023.
– BRIA MACK GETS A LIFE – New Metric Media. Created by Sasha Leigh Henry. Directed by Kelly Fyffe-Marshall. Premiered on Crave in Fall 2023.
CBC Radio-Canada | Acting Senior Producer, Video Producer for Q on CBC Television | 2014-2016
Oversaw execution of Q the CBC TV show and YouTube channel in collaboration with Senior Producers from CBC Radio and arts/radio journalist team; Oversaw the total redesign of studio set due to rebranding; Wrote scripts; talent development of new hosts, namely rapper Shad; Built show lineups and oversaw delivery of all content for distribution; Edit and packaged the show in Adobe Premiere Pro; Directed, shot and edited all live studio interviews and musical performances.
Colour Theory: A 2SQTBIPOC Short Film Night | Co-Founder, Co-Organizer | 2017-2020
Led and co-organized a short film night exclusively for those who identify as 2SLGBTQ and Black, Indigenous, or people of colour (2SQTBIPOC) directors; Mandate was to foster a welcoming space that prioritizes the diverse access needs of 2SQTBIPOC.
JAY CAROLYN WU is a creative producer and writer/director. They were a development executive at Bell Media from 2021 to 2023 where they developed scripted series across comedy and drama for CTV and Crave, including Sullivan’s Crossing, starring Chad Michael Murray and Scott Patterson. The show became CTV’s #1 hit drama for 2023 and is airing on The CW in the US, now heading into its third season. Since leading development at award-winning independent production company LaRue Entertainment (The Amazing Gayl Pile, My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes) as Head of Development, they have built out the company’s robust slate of creator-driven series and features, including an ensemble sitcom that is in development with CBC Comedy, executive produced by Tyra Banks’s SMiZE Productions, written/created by frequent collaborator Keisha Phoenixx, and co-produced by Blink49 Studios (Wild Cards, The Trades) and Scythia Films (The Apprentice, Close to You), as well as Aram Collier’s upcoming sophomore feature INTRO TO SWIMMING, which was selected for Telefilm’s Regional Production Program 2025. They also lead projects with partners like Elliot Page’s PageBoy Productions, Bruce McCulloch (The Kids in the Hall), Chemically Altered Productions (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Drunk History), Joe Pirro (The Wedding Banquet, Driveways), and Lindsay Blair Goeldner (I Like Movies, Learn to Swim). Named to Playback’s 10 to Watch in 2024, Jay is also a writer/director whose short films have played in film festivals domestically and around the world. Their coming-of-age hockey short film TOE THE LINE (2021) was nominated for Golden Sheaf for Scripted Short at Yorkton Film Festival 2022, and screened at festivals including Inside Out Toronto 2022, Vancouver Queer Film Festival 2022, and Vancouver Asian Film Festival 2021. Their musical-comedy short film IN MY MOTHER’S CLOSET screened at Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival 2017, Wicked Queer Boston 2018, Transforming Cinema Sheffield UK 2018, and TranScreen Amsterdam Transgender Film Festival 2019. They are currently working on their upcoming comedic feature co-directed and written by Keisha-Phoenixx, YO WE’RE DYING, which was selected for Telefilm’s Talent to Watch 2023. The film was also part of the Every Story Fellowship at TIFF 2024 and was a Quarterfinalist for Screencraft’s Film Fund 2024.
Jay is also a frequent facilitator, educator, public speaker, mentor, and advocate for 2SLGBTQ & BIPOC storytellers. Originally inspired by Chandler Bing, Niles Crane, Lorelai Gilmore, and Cristina Yang, Jay considers themself a relationship-driven development and storytelling nerd in all facets of their work.
